Each year world AIDS day is celebrated on 1st December. In this regard, a talk was organized by faculty of Community Medicine Department, Foundation University Medical College, Islamabad.
Dr Shumaila Humayun hosted the talk and Dr Sumaira Masood as guest speaker gave expert opinion. She discussed that HIV/AIDS is a fatal but preventable disease. In Pakistan, it is emerging as an epidemic in certain population groups like IV drug abusers, homosexual males, individuals with multiple partners, transgenders and even children. In reply to a question, she emphasized that prevention is the best remedy and that public should be made aware about precautionary measures. In relation to this year theme, “Equitable Access, Everyone's Voice”, she highlighted the role of government in improving the access to services and removing stigma attached to patients suffering from AIDS.
